Generous Permission

”Nothing redeems but beauty, its generous permission,

its gorgeous celebration of all that has previously been uncelebrated.”

What Does it Mean to Be An Artist?

October 2, 2019

What drives me to paint? I suppose I’m excited and curious about what the paint will do! I don’t always know what magical things will happen, but I know that if I give myself the routine studio time and permission to work, then marvelous discoveries are inevitable.  I really enjoy painting; the physical aspect of it is immensely satisfying.

I see my art as bringing a true delight to other people.  Painting feels like a dance with the world, with the colors and shapes that are everywhere, around me and within me, even in my own dreams and imaginative visions.  With my paintings, I feel like I am opening a door for others, showing them how I see the world.

I envision a life, my life, lived fully as an artist.  My art will add beauty to the world and make people happy.  Or else, it will make them feel something.  How do I sustain my investigations in the studio?  How do I develop my studio practice?  I think it’s mostly a combination of Courage, Perseverance and Trust.  Oh yeah, and Patience.  It probably will take my whole life, but that’s all right with me.  It’s a wonderful way to live.
