Generous Permission

”Nothing redeems but beauty, its generous permission,

its gorgeous celebration of all that has previously been uncelebrated.”

Cape May Paintings

October 10, 2018

In July, my sister rented a house in Cape May, a few blocks from the beach. We all met there for a week, including our significant others, kids, and our parents. It was a big house, so there was room for everyone, and we had a good time being together. Here’s a picture of me and my three sisters in downtown Cape May. I’m all the way on the left. The baby is my nephew, Nicholas.

Days were busy, filled with fun family activities, but I immediately realized that I needed to carve out some alone time for painting. I got up before dawn almost every morning and I ventured out onto the beach to paint. I enjoyed those mornings of peace and quiet and solitude. I also went out a few evenings around sunset. Here are some of the small sketches I made. You can see the grains of sand stuck in a lot of them!
